MER DE GLACE, ALPS, FRANCE

September 18, 2006

MM7246_060918_.4428.jpg

A tourist walkway to the Mer de Glace is a graphic indicator of the glacier's shrinkage. In 1988, the walkway reached the ice at the highest extension of the walkway on the left, but in the course of the next 18 years the ice thinned so much that downward extensions of the walkway were successively added so that visitors could still touch the glacier. Note figure on landing in middle of the stairway for scale.
